The American Lawyer announced that DLA Piper’s nonprofit affiliate New Perimeter will receive a lifetime achievement Global Citizenship Award as part of the publication’s inaugural Global Legal Awards. DLA Piper will be honored at a dinner on September 23 at Gotham Hall in New York City.

After receiving more than 300 nominations, the publication created new categories to honor the important global legal work handled by legal teams across the country and world. New Perimeter will receive the Global Citizenship Award: Lifetime Achievement honor – the only firm to do so.

New Perimeter, a nonprofit organization established by DLA Piper in 2005, provides pro bono legal assistance primarily in developing and post-conflict regions. A first-of-its-kind initiative in the legal industry, New Perimeter’s mission is to provide long-term, high-impact pro bono legal support to qualifying nonprofit organizations, governments and academic institutions.

New Perimeter draws on the skills and talents of more than 4,000 DLA Piper lawyers globally and focuses its projects in the areas of legal education, women and children’s rights, access to justice and law reform, environmental protection, economic development and food security.

DLA Piper, a participating member of the Clinton Global Initiative, pledged its Commitment to Action to support legal education in East Africa at the organization’s 2012 annual meeting. New Perimeter has supported legal education in East Africa since its inception in 2005 and globally has provided legal education courses to more than 2,000 law students and practicing lawyers in Colombia, Ethiopia, Guyana, Kosovo, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

New Perimeter’s work has also positively impacted women’s rights in Zimbabwe and access to justice and law reform in North Korea and Kosovo. Its economic development assistance supported farmers in Colombia and rural Namibian women artists. Its hunger and food security initiatives helped create the legal entity for the Global FoodBanking Network and its environmental protection work supports such organizations as the Conservation International Foundation and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales International Sustainability Unit.
